Truck Wheel Dolly Buying Guide: Weight, Size and Fit
Getting a heavy wheel off your truck is only part of a tire change. Bringing it back to the hub, holding it upright and turning it until the holes line up can be the awkward part, especially with a larger all-terrain tire.
Choose a truck wheel dolly by the weight and outside dimensions of the assembled wheel, then check its rollers and the space beside your truck. For this job, you want a tool that supports and positions the removed wheel.

Start With a Dolly for Handling Removed Wheels
Several garage tools are called dollies. For a tire change, look for a tire-handling dolly that cradles one assembled wheel on rollers. The rollers let the tire turn while the frame carries its weight.
Car positioning dollies sit beneath the tires so you can move a whole vehicle around a shop. A tow dolly is for towing a vehicle behind another one. For aligning a removed wheel with the hub, look for a tire-handling dolly.
Picture the job you want help with: bringing a wheel back to the truck, holding it upright and turning it slightly until the holes line up. That is the task a roller-style tire dolly is designed around. A tire-changing machine, which separates a tire from its rim, is a different piece of equipment.
Check the Weight and Size of the Complete Wheel
Include the Tire and the Wheel in the Weight
Use the weight of the tire and metal wheel together, including anything that stays attached when you remove the wheel. A tire-only weight from the manufacturer's spec sheet leaves out the metal wheel.
For example, an 80 lb tire mounted on a 40 lb wheel makes a 120 lb assembly. These are sample weights, but the arithmetic is the same for your setup. Get the figures from the tire and wheel manufacturers, or ask a tire shop to weigh the assembled wheel if you cannot establish its weight.
Compare that total with the dolly's rating for one assembled wheel, under the conditions stated in its instructions. A higher weight rating does not answer whether the tire will sit securely on the rollers.
Measure the Outside of the Tire
Wheel diameter and tire diameter are different measurements. A 17-inch wheel has a tire wrapped around it, so the complete assembly is much taller than 17 inches. Use the outside tire dimensions when checking a dolly's stated fit range.
| What to Check | How to Check the Fit |
|---|---|
| Assembly weight | Add the tire and wheel weights. Compare the total with the rating for one assembled wheel. |
| Outside diameter | Measure from tread to opposite tread. Compare with the supported tire diameter range. |
| Overall tire width | Measure the widest part of the inflated tire. Compare with the stated width range and usable roller support. |
| Roller adjustment | Check the available positions on the frame against the setup specified for your tire size. |
Read dimension labels closely. Roller spacing, roller length and supported tire diameter describe different things. If a listing leaves the relationship unclear, send the seller your assembly weight, outside diameter and overall width, and ask which roller position supports that combination.
Look for Rollers That Help You Line Up the Wheel
A heavy wheel can be close to the hub and still be awkward to fit. You may need to turn it a little to line up the mounting holes while keeping it at the right height. Rollers are useful because they allow the tire to rotate without repeatedly picking up the whole assembly.
Check how the rollers attach to the frame. An adjustable design should have clearly defined positions and the correct retaining hardware. Set it up as directed before loading it; do not reposition loaded rollers or substitute improvised pins.
Ask whether the dolly can move the wheel up or down to line it up with the hub. A long handle alone does not mean it has a hydraulic lift or a separate height adjustment.
Rotating rollers and swiveling base wheels do different jobs. The rollers turn the tire; the small wheels move the dolly across the floor. A claim of “360-degree rotation” alone does not tell you that the loaded dolly can travel sideways.
Make Sure You Can Use It Around Your Truck
Check the space beside the truck with the vehicle parked where you normally work. Include the wheel, dolly base, handle and room for you to stand. A dolly that fits beneath the tire may still be awkward if its handle runs straight into a cabinet.
Trace the route from the hub to your wheel-storage area. Door thresholds, floor cracks, drain channels and loose gravel can interrupt that route. Choose a model intended for your surface and keep the working area firm, level and clear; a larger load rating does not make small wheels suitable for rough ground.
Check how much floor space the assembled dolly takes up and how far the handle sticks out. If the handle comes apart for storage, follow the instructions for securing it again before the next use.
For occasional seasonal swaps, easy setup and a clear place to put the tool can matter more than extra features. For repeated shop use, access to replacement rollers, wheels and retaining hardware is also worth asking about.
GARVEE Tire Dollies to Consider
These two GARVEE options use a similar design: a long handle and two rollers for handling a removed wheel. Compare the exact model with your wheel's measurements and the space in your garage before choosing.
GARVEE Tire Wheel Dolly With Adjustable Rollers
The GARVEE Tire Wheel Dolly with adjustable rollers has two 9.6-inch rollers that you can reposition on the frame. Check which roller position supports your tire, and make sure you have room to use the handle.
GARVEE Adjustable Tire Lifter Dolly
The GARVEE Adjustable Tire Lifter Dolly uses a similar design with a long handle and two rollers. Check its assembled size against your storage space. The parts layout on the product page shows the handle sections, roller pins and wheels.
Send the seller your complete wheel weight, outside tire diameter and overall width. Then ask: “Does this exact model support those measurements, and which roller position should I use?” Get any conflicting load or size information cleared up before you order.
Keep the Vehicle Secure Before Handling the Wheel
The dolly handles the removed wheel. Prepare the vehicle using its manufacturer's jacking and support procedure, with suitable lifting equipment, supports and wheel chocks. Keep hands and feet clear of the wheel's path and the gaps around the rollers.
Follow the vehicle maker's jacking-point instructions and work on a dry, level surface. CCOHS's jack-safety guidance also calls for suitable safety stands before anyone works underneath. Never get under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
If the wheel is too heavy or unstable for you to control, arrange help or use a tire service shop. A dolly can reduce the amount you need to carry, but it does not guarantee that every wheel change is a one-person job.
For large commercial-truck wheels and multi-piece rims, use a trained tire service shop. OSHA's rim-wheel servicing guidance explains the separate training and equipment requirements for covered US workplaces. A wheel dolly does not replace those procedures or act as a tire-inflation restraint.
Before buying, write down your complete wheel weight, outside tire diameter and overall width, then check the route and handle space in your garage. Those details give you a practical basis for choosing a truck wheel dolly you can actually use.
